WiiWare releases of recent weeks have been, to say the least, underwhelming. Gravitronix, unfortunately, is not the exception.

While the concept of spherical Pong with various shaped projectiles flying around the screen between anywhere from 2-8 players is only mildly entertaining in itself, the controls make every effort to make the gameplay as unenjoyable as possible.

As I mentioned, the Gravitronix plays like a game of advanced Pong within a circular field of play as shapes fly around in every direction, and players do their best to deflect anything that comes their way. Your ability to do so is hampered by the off-putting twist-a-WiiMote controls (I would rather have used the D-pad or the stick, or at least have the option.). Twisting your Wii Remote moves your gravity platform (launcher) around your quadrant of the arena as you attempt to protect your territory from flying shapes while at the same time launching the shapes to penetrate your enemies’ defenses.

Aside from the controls the gameplay itself is only halfway fun. I realize that I keep comparing this game to Pong, but that is the best way to describe it. The formula doesn’t hold up almost 40 years later—especially when playing against computer opponents. Against multiple players, there is more fun to be had, but with no online—unless you live in a full house—finding three to seven extra players for every game you want to play is a tough task.

While I can see Gravitronix having a bit of appeal for younger kids as long as they play with a group of friends, most above a certain age group won’t have as easy a time getting the group together for an 8-player doubles faceoff. For everyone else, hold onto those Wii Points this week.

Pros: Up to 8 players can go at it, nunchucks can be used in lieu of extra Wii Remotes (i.e. 4 players can play with two Wiimotes and two chuks.).

Cons:  Weak control scheme with no options to change it, No online play.

GamePro Score: 2.5
