Every year my brother buys the brand new edition of Madden, and every year after about 4 weeks he's not playing it anymore. He gets excited about football in August and lets that energy talk him into purchasing a game that's too much for a casual player. What he really needs is a bite sized version of Madden, not the full 7-course meal a hardcore guy like myself wants.

EA has had success with mini-versions of sports titles. Earlier this year they released "NCAA March Madness" before the big tournament and right before that "3 on 3 NHL Arcade" was available for download.

Sports are America's passion. Doesn't it make sense for gaming companies to capitalize on that with smaller iterations of its popular sports, or even an arcade version of more obscure sports to see if there's fan interest (see rugby and arena football) for full blown titles? Hardcore sports fans would probably buy both the arcade game and the disc game, and casual fans could get the portion size they're looking for.

From all the disc based sport games I really don't think downloadable titles will make a different, besides we are in a 3d time now no one really wants to go back to 2d and 8 bit for crappy display anyway right? I know I wouldn't 3d is the wave of the future. Oops did someone say 4d & 5d?

NCAA March Madness was a download that was a mini-version of its console brother. That's the kind of arcade sports title I'm talking about, not some 8 bit model.
