Let's get this out of the way from the start-- if you already own the 2007 XBLA release of Bomberman, Bomberman Live, there is no need to purchase the latest PSN title. Almost two years later comes another edition of a successful Bomberman game, Bomberman Ultra.
Classic Bomberman gameplay is back as players attempt to destroy their competitors by dropping bombs to explode walls and their competition. Action is quick and chaotic but the fixed camera makes gameplay easy to follow. Spot on controls and fast paced matches make Bomberman great to play in a multiplayer environment. Deep offline and online modes are thankfully provided in this $10 download.
Multiplayer works great with no noticeable lag during matches. Full leaderboards are included and just about every stat is tracked. Without a true single player campaign, Bomberman Ultra makes up for it with customizable online options. Each round can be customized based on what items appear in each level, for example. Included are 14 different stages that can have a real effect on gameplay because of the environmental effects.
Collectors won't be disappointed as there is plenty to unlock, such as accessories to customize your Bomberman avatar.
Graphics and sound work great as well. This art style fits the game perfectly and the colors pop off the screen.
Bomberman Ultra is a must own for fans of the series but the lack of new features doesn't make this a must buy for fans of the 2007 XBLA release. However, if you do not own a 360 and are waiting for the classic Bomberman experience on the PS3, download this version immediately.
