Even though its deemed a classic, I had never played Lode Runner prior to this release. By finally getting some time with the game, it is clear this title was designed years ago and that is apparent by more than just the 25th anniversary logo on the title screen. Gameplay is hard. In fact, its too difficult. I had trouble getting past the first couple of levels. When I went into the menu screen, there were no difficulty levels to choose from. What makes this game tough is twofold: puzzles and enemies. Not only do you have to think of the solutions on the fly, you have to make sure to stay away from the multiple enemies that chase you in each level. Get hit just once and the game makes you start over from the beginning of the stage, resetting any progress made.

Lode Runner can best be described as a 2D puzzle platformer. However, this platformer does not allow you to jump. That is where the puzzle aspects come into play. Using the ladders on each level and your ability to break blocks; you traverse each level with the goal of collecting every piece of gold.

If you're into tough old-school gaming, Lode Runner definitely has you covered. To justify it's seemingly steep $15 pricetag, Lode Runner offers a complete single player mode, a survival-type option and 50 mind numbing puzzle levels. If that is not enough, coop and competitive multiplayer, online and off, is there for the taking.  Want more? A level editor with the ability to share with other players is also included.

The game's graphics are surprisingly pleasing but there is no "original graphics" option for those interested.

Even though so much is included, it all comes down to the gameplay. It's tough to fault the developers for staying true to the original, but in today's age, games have gotten more forgiven, something that Lode Runner seems to forget.
