The Atari 2600 hosted a plethora of fun titles and is considered the birthplace of gaming. The graphics and sounds are what everyone seems to remember the most and even today are still influential. Bit. Trip Beat takes that old school feel and revamps it for a new generation. Its essentially a rhythm game that uses a Pong style control scheme where you hit square blocks that when hit, give out a beat. Throw in four player co-op play as well and you and your friends will be dancing it up for hours.

The concept is simple but can get pretty crazy very quick. Holding the Wiimote on its side like an old school NES controller, gamers tilt it up and down to move their paddle up and down on the screen to get the blocks. The patterns of the blocks start off basic, but then start coming in at angles, changing colors and coming in super fast. Getting a good rhythm will rack up the combo points, filling up a bar at the top. Once full you then move on to the next stage which is a little more detailed and colorful. But if you start missing the blocks the game reverts to a more and more basic version of the game until you eventually hit a black and white style.

The visuals are pleasing. Instead of having a bright shine to them they definitely feel retro, like they stole the color palette from the Atari 2600. The background will host new items on it, each more detailed than the last. Music is basic techno beats, which isn’t a bad thing. The game features a few different songs for you to play through and will get you jamming to the beat as you’re playing through them. But the downside to this game is it only has 3 songs/levels and then you’re done. More songs would have been a little better but it’s not a major complaint.

This is the first in the series of Bit.Tip titles brought to you by Gaijin Games and they knock it out of the park with a great first title. Solid controls, four player co-op play, enjoyable music and old school visuals that will make anyone smile. This is a must download for the Wii.
