Do you often dream about playing a sci-fi shooter that reminds you of what games use to be? Well, Planet Smash has the cure for that itch in more ways than one. Difficulty, weapons, tons of enemies and multiple power ups are what's in store for you during your space siege. The aliens are trying to take over and it's up to you of course to stop them. Armed with your ship and a butt load of guts you venture out into space to take out this alien menace.
This is a vertical scroll shoot' em up that is simple and basic. Spanning over five different stages with four unique power ups on each stage, this is as retro as you can get. But with retro also comes difficulty. This may seem like a simple space shooter but it isn't. Bullets and enemies blend into the background as well as multiple bullet strings going in every direction. This will causes multiple deaths as well as the need to hunt for the med packs that float about the space arena. But you do have multiple ways of combating these alien foes. With numerous arrays of bullet types and heat seeking missiles as an alternative fire, you have the tools to destroy you just need practice at using them. The visuals are that of the old arcade shooters, basic colors with bright and vibrant landscapes. This feels like a title that would have been ported to the NES back in the day. Sound is running on the same ship, 8-bit music mixed with the numerous laser and bullet sounds take you back to the good ol' days. The music can get a little annoying but it's nothing to fret over.
The only real complaint on this title is the power ups constantly change as they move about the screen, so many times you will find one that you need to get through the waves and at the last second it changes to the crappy blue laser which does little to no damage. That's a minor complaint for a game that is what it is suppose to be, a somewhat difficult space shooter with all the classic game play elements. Make sure to check this one out and try not to curse too much at the screen due to cheap pixels.
